10 Lesser Known Fossil Parks of India

The Geological Survey of India maintained most of the fossil parks of India including two protected areas with rich fossil deposits known as Shivalik Fossil Park in Himachal Pradesh and Mandla Plant Fossils National Park of Madhya Pradesh. There are numerous fossil displays and models in Indian zoological parks and also manages the following fossil parks in India, Other fossil parks in India also includes Salkhan Fossils Park in Uttar Pradesh, Marine Fossil Park in Chhattisgarh and Dinosaur Fossil Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Shivalik Fossil Park, Himachal Pradesh

Shivalik Fossil Park is Asia’s oldest fossil park, located in Suketi village in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The Shivalik Fossil Park has collection of prehistoric vertebrate fossils,skeletons and glass life size model of extinct animals such as Elephant of Sivalik Hills and Giant Turtle Megalochelys atlas.

Mandla Plant Fossils National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Mandla Plant Fossils National Park is spread over seven villages of Mandla district and has plants in fossil that were existed in India. This national park is well-known for its large collection of plant fossils which include palms, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Sathanur National Fossil Wood Park, Tamil Nadu

National Fossil Wood Park at Sathanur has a fossilized tree trunk measures around 18 meters long. The parkĀ  is frequently visited by geologists and open to public throughout the year.

Ghughua Fossil Park, Madhya Pradesh

Ghughua Fossil Park is located between Ghughua and Umaria village in Madhya Pradesh. The park contains most prominent fossils the palm, some of which dates as far back as 65 million years.

India’s second dinosaur fossil park is going to set up in Dhar by the Madhya Pradesh Government. The state government had approved the construction of this park in 2011.

Salkhan or Sonbhadra Fossils Park is under jurisdiction of the state forest department, located near the Salkhan village in Uttar Pradesh. The park contains fossils which are nearly 1400 million years old.

Marine Gondwana Fossil Park, Chhattisgarh

Marine Gondwana fossil park is recently added park by Geological Survey of India and Chhattisgarh state is developing it as the first Marine fossil park in the country, located in Manendragarh at Sarguja district.

Tiruvakkarai Fossil Wood Park, Tamil Nadu

National Fossil wood park is also a geological park,maintained by the Geological Survey of India. This Fossil wood park is located in Tiruvakkarai in the Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu and hosts about 200 fossilized trees.
