Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan state is the first tiger reserve in the world to have successfully relocated Bengal Tigers. The 866 km2 area of Sariska was a hunting ground for the Alwar state and supports rocky landscapes,dry forest and hilly cliffs.
Bengal Tigers (Panthera Tigris Tigris) are the most attractive feature of this reserve and heaven for diverse wildlife species in Rajasthan. The area of Sariska Tiger Reserve is part of the Aravalli mountain range and also ethereal for bird watchers with rarest species of birds like Sandgrouse,woodpecker and Indian eagle owl.
Re-introduction of tigers to Sariska decided to import one male and females tiger from Ranthambore National Park. Rathore and Baghani were the first two tigers re-introduced into Sariska but later on Rathore was poisoned. In all 7 tigers have been shifted from Ranthambore to Sariska so far and two cubs of tigress ST 10 have been spotted.
Poacher Sansar Chand is blamed for wiping out Sariska’s tiger population and single handedly responsible for the all missing tigers of the Sariska sanctuary.
Sariska Refuge is also home to many species of wild animal and wildlife such as the Indian leopard, striped hyena, Indian jackal, chinkara antelope, jungle cat,caracal,Indian crested porcupine and honey badger.
