Only 5 Largest Species of Bustard Found in India

As per our research about the birds of bustard found on the Indian subcontinent, There are five species living mainly in dry grassland areas of Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Ranging from Rajasthan to Bengal and listed as heaviest living birds capable of flight, Kori bustard is the largest bustard in the world, found in Africa.

Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps)

Great Indian bustard is listed among the heaviest flying birds found in the world, Only found in dry plains of the Indian subcontinent. The bustard is a critically endangered bird and protected under Wildlife Protection Act 1972 of India.

Bengal Florican (Houbarobsis bengalensis)

The critically endangered Bengal florican also called Bengal bustard, live in open tall grassland habitats of Terai from Nepal to Assam and West Bengal. Bengal Bustard is the rarest species bustard of Indian bustard family, Can be spotted in Dibru-Saikhowa and Kaziranga National Parks.

Lesser Florican (Sypheotides indicus)

Lesser Florican is the smallest of bustard bird found in India,endemic to the Indian Subcontinent and best known for distinctive dance during the breeding season. The small bustard is similar species of the Bengal florican and breeds mainly in and western parts of India.

MacQueen’s Bustard (Chlamydotis macqueenii)

MacQueen’s bustard is native to the desert regions of India, Asia and across Kazakhstan east to Mongolia. This medium-sized bustard only found in the dry arid zone of western India along with other species found in Rajasthan.

Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata)

Houbara Bustard is another large bustard native to Africa but a regular visitors of Indian side of desert areas in Jaisalmer and Barmer of Rajasthan. The migratory Houbara Bustard bird is known as Tilore locally and one of the five species of bustard found in India.
